WHY WE LOVE IT? Because it is a beautiful & well-thought watch and the direct successor of the 1969-Seiko Astron cal35; because it is overlooked but of highest historical and horological relevance and technically, with its important movement, its case & its finishing, something really outstanding.
三八 (さんぱち, Sanpachi: san & pachi) means "three & eight" and it is this cal38 that is the core of this important & beautiful & technologically outstanding watch -- a horological milestone in many ways: Very Fine Adjusted (V.F.A.) Sanpachi-Quartz. A well-thought and -manufactured watch-movement that has an outstanding position in horology; on top of this horological & technological achievement is the mesmerizing washi-paper dial with 12 applied hour-indexes and the applied & floating SEIKO- & QUARTZ-logo; encased in a heavy and close-to-perfect watch-case. Something that would today find its position in the Micro Artist Studio-made Credor-line or in Patek Philippes "Rare Handcrafts" ("Métiers d’Art"), because it is exactly that: the finest art of manu-facture (ie. hand-made).
What we see here is something so special and outstanding -- a horological very important watch and at the same time something of probably perfect appearance: the worlds first quartz with (analog) temperature-compensation -- the first car with a turbo-charger: something that changed watches (precision) and cars (power & efficiency) forever -- in perfect design and execution.

The first temperature-compensating quartzwatch and thus a horological milestone; but as well a testament to Japanese art & design. Same as the Porsche 930, which was the first and innovative Turbo-charged road-car and changed output-efficiency of a car-engine, the Seiko Sanpachi V.F.A. cal38 was the first temperature-compensated electronic watch and changed the output-efficiency of a quartz-watch (precision) significantly. Both appeared in 1973 (1974 for the Porsche 930) and both shared the wide-body design and the manufactured (ie. completely handmade) hammered sides. The very rare and special whitegold variant with the early (just made in 1973) hammered dial: this is one of the rarest Seiko V.F.A. and it is probably the technologically most interesting because of its innovative movement and the amazing monocoque-case.
Additional to that it is the first 18K-whitegold Seiko ever: Never before Seiko made a watch from that material. Credor was not yet existent (est. 1974) and even the Seikos marked "GrandSeiko" -- yes, it was not a sub-brand until 2017, but a quality-stamp -- were not made in whitegold before the 2000s. The case itself is a monocoque-case with just the screwed battery-hatch to open from the back.
Overall a watch as functional & practical & precise even today and even more: outstanding and rare.
