Mechanical Bastion: Royal JLC cal906 "Chronometer"
Vacheron Constantin Important Automatic: Royal Chronometer, cal906 & Coin-Edge

- Time (Hour, Minute, Central Second)
WHY WE LOVE IT? Well, VC was not part of the C.E.H. Beta21-jointventure and it was until the early 80s when they presented their first quartz-movement (cal1009). Until then, they used probably their best Automatic-movement, the JLC cal906-based cal1096, to counter the takeover by electronic watches. Used in the ref42001 (aka VC ref2215) and in this ref42011 it is a special movement in a beautiful and timeless solid-gold case.
Yes, the VC cal1096 is probably one of their best automatic-calibers, ever. And its superiority is not only based on its great look; no, it is superior to any other VC-automatic used in the '50s, '60s & '70s in a technical sense: it is often Chronometer-graded, has a second-hacking feature and -- most important -- a super-efficient automatic-winding. Yes, the latter is based on the usage of a ball-bearing (1st time for VC, to make use of the Eterna-innovation "EternaMatic" from 1948) and a big & heavy solid-gold rotor.
The important movement was presented by JLC in 1973 and used in their important (and rare) cal906-Chronometers (JLC ref24000, ref24001 & ref24002). Vacheron used it as well and put it into its portfolio as a mechanical bastion against electronic watches.
