Rare Classic AP cal2072: Rubies-Automat

Audemars Piguet Important Automatic Classique Calatrava

CHF 9,700

WHY WE LOVE IT? An important early automatic by AP: powered by the beautiful cal2072 (== cal2071 + date) with the ruby-bearing rotor. Technically outstanding but even the design is interesting with its amazing shaped lugs: look how it fits with an ultra-thin strap that we created for this monochrome icon.

The watch was serviced and is running reliable & precise -- and most important: neither the dial not the case was "refreshed" or "refurbished" / polished but is all original. The case has the serialnumber 30'XXX and the movement-serialnumber is 86'XXX and so we date this watch to the year 1963 (approx) according to our books, notes and research. The dial has the applied, beautiful faceted indexes and shows a discoloration on the left side. Delivered with original AW-steel buckle & box.

NB: The alloy "Acier Staybrite" used by AP in the 1960s for this three-part case (screwed caseback) was a delicate experiment -- they (to my knowledge) all suffer from oxidation and most were seriously "refreshed" by polishing, welding and lasering, while this example was kept all original and instead shows the oxidation very common with this alloy: esp on the middle part of the case.
