#WHY? Omega Beta21 Has Crown On The Left?
Tuesday, February 3, 2026
It is one of the beautiful sagas of watchmaking, that comes out different than usually told: Why has the Omega ref196.005 "Pupitre" Beta21 the setting-crown on the left?
- "because you show that way, that you dont need to use it: winding & setting un-necessary" -- says the informed Omega-collector;
- "it was a Selling-Argument back then to make it look more interesting" -- says the Omega-veteran from Biel, Switzerland;
Neither! The C.E.H. (Centre Electronic Horology, the joint-venture of Swiss watch-brands to create the 1st Swiss quartzwatch) made a mistake by placing the thickest part of the movement, the battery on the lower side of it. That way the case is either leveled and super-massive or tapering and so a bit thinner and more elegant, but to the wrong side, ie. away from the wearer. Solution: you turn the movement by 180° to have your case tapering and bending towards the wearer; downside: now the crown is on the left side of the case -- "Tell them a story to make it work, Urs."
