Best-Condition Rolex King Midas
Rolex King Midas: 1st Series w/ Sticker

- Time (Hour, Minute)
WHY WE LOVE IT? Because there are other yellowgold 1st series Rolex Midas, sure. But there are no other better than this. A probably unworn yellowgold first series Rolex King Midas is nowadays probably a unique watch from the brand with the crown. All original, unpolished and not "refreshed" by a service. The reference for Rolex King Midas.
The icon in all original and excellent condition with the 9630-sticker on the caseback. The Midas: it comes in much higher quality than any other Rolex-watch from the same era. And the condition of this example makes it a museum-piece. An probably unworn example with the original 9630-sticker intact on caseback is something special and probably the most special & best yellowgold 1st series that is around.
Epilogue: When you saw this ensemble (unusual Rolex & its lavish, unique presentation box) approx 50 or 60 years ago, then you have received it as a gift, for sure.
And you did so because you were either
- the worlds most visionary watchmaker (René-Paul Jeanneret, Rolex Submariner-innovator),
- the worlds best car-driver (Jackie Stewart, Formula 1-Champion),
- the worlds most popular singer (Elvis, King of Rock),
- the worlds most successful actor (John Wayne)
or the worlds most avant-garde...
You know, the Rolex-Midas series was a standalone series next to Oyster etc. And it was the testimony of Hans Wilsdorf and the highest quality, the rarest and the most expensive Rolex from 1962 until 1972. Indeed, Hans Wilsdorfs last project: "The closer one comes to his end, the more immortal the products have to be." Heavy, stable & solid gold-case & -bracelet with a strong connection to the past (Midas-theme) and a strong grip to the future (design & "eternal metal": gold) topped with Rolex' first usage of the "ever-lasting" sapphire-crystal.
In 1973 it was integrated in the Cellini line... and not only the weight was reduced significantly but also the superb and expensive quality was diminished in any Cellini. And so the original Midas (King ref9630, Queen ref9903 and Princess ref9904) remain an elusive outlier in the Rolex history.
