Patek-Surprises at Watches & Wonders 2024

Tuesday, April 9, 2024

Well, many say there is not so much surprising in the news presented by Patek at this years Watches & Wonders-fair in Geneva. Maybe. But two things are surprising on the plus-side and worth to point out in my opinion:

  • The Patek Aquanaut ref5269 comes with a quartz-movement: precise, hassle-free and low-maintenance. A correct step in my opinion and one that might take quartz out of the shadow (again).
  • The Patek Ellipse ref5738 comes with a amazing integrated bracelet -- removable and on a center-lug / vendome-lug. Not only beautiful but also high quality work of gold-smiths that sets you apart, yes.

And one on the negative side:

  • I dont understand the idea of flat dials and big brushed rehauts. The brushing removes all the reflections and mirroring-effects that are not only interesting but also play with light and give some depths to the watch. And if there is a lot of distance between dial and crystal -- just use it! But they dont: The new Aquanauts and the new Nautilus are (not only) thats why far behind what one would expect.

But hey, its Patek. It is considered the top-dog in horology so what should be wrong here, right!? Anyway, who expected a revolution from the brand for the next generation probably expected a bit too much.
