The ad in 1967 made it clear: the brand Universal Geneve went full electronic with the Accutron tuningfork-caliber -- UniSonic, humming fine at the audible rate of 360Hz. "The most accurate way of keeping time ever devised! For space-travellers here and way out there. Space is Infinite, Time is Universal"
Indeed, the Accutron was not only the relevant space- & moonwatch (*klikk) but also the first electronic watch & the innovative door-opener on the road to quartz. It changed the watch-industry overnight: while before the Accutron-presentation (Oct 25th, 1960) the main and most noble goal of watchmaking was precision, this motto was multiplied with minus one after that date. Now, only a somehow "imperfect" watch running on a mechanical mechanism using an outdated and antique technology was a "watch with a soul" -- going wrong 5 to 30mins per month became an attitude. By the way, the reason Punks loved mechanical watches so much, while the Yuppie-move (Young Urban Professionals) and everyone that preferred to be sharp on time went towards quartz in the late 70s and 1980s.
Why we think this tecchnology is still fascinating and how it works, is written in our #tuningfork blogs: *klikk.
